Certain expenses are deemed necessary for you to pursue your studies and are considered in the assessment of the assistance that could be awarded to you.
Categories of expenses
Allowable expenses are divided into two categories:
- Monthly expenses (recurring monthly)
Would you like an estimate of the amounts that could be recognized as allowable monthly expenses? For which award year will you be applying?
- One-time expenses (only allowed in certain situations or months)
Would you like an estimate of the amounts that could be recognized as allowable one-time expenses?
Months for which expenses are recognized
Allowable expenses are recognized for each month you meet the one of the following conditions:
- You are a full-time student.
- You are deemed to be enrolled.
- You have withdrawn from your course or studies, provided you pursue full-time studies during the following study period.
Please note that the first month of study of the award year is considered in determining the allowable expenses only if studies begin before the 16th day of that month. In contrast, the last month considered in the award year is the month that counts at least one day of studies.
The recognition of expenses depends on your circumstances, e.g. you reside with your parents, you are studying outside Québec, your circumstances are exceptional.
No expenses are allowed for any month in which:
- You receive social assistance or social solidarity benefits; however, certain expenses are allowed during the first month of study
- You are participating in a program of study offered and paid for by Human Resources and Social Development Canada
- You are participating in an Emploi-Québec manpower training measure
- You are serving a prison sentence
You are deemed to be enrolled
Even if you are not studying, you could be deemed to be enrolled, provided:
- You live with your child and are in a financial situation that could lead to total destitution
- You have a major functional disability
- You are at least 20 weeks pregnant
- You are eligible for the Social Assistance and Support Program – Réussir program offered by the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale and you pursue full-time studies in the fall session following the current award year
- You are affected by a serious episodic disorder resulting from a major and permanent physical or mental health problem
Expenses can be recognized for up to four months between study periods.
