Eligibility Requirements

You can file an application for financial assistance if

  • you are a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident, refugee or protected person status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • you have part-time student status and your studies are not deemed full-time studies
  • you are pursuing studies at a recognized educational institution.

Note that to be eligible under the Loans Program for Part-Time Studies, you must be attending an educational institution that is recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport and enrolled in a recognized program of study.

If you are pursuing distance learning studies, you are eligible under the Program if the distance learning institution is recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport and the courses are part of a recognized program of study

To be considered a part-time student at an educational institution for a given term, you must be enrolled in the following number of credits or course hours:

Secondary school vocational training: 76 to 179 course hours
College: 76 to 179 course hours
University (undergraduate, graduate or doctoral program): 6 to 11 credits

Aide financière aux études will consider all your income for the 2010 tax year (January 1 to December 31) to determine your eligibility under the Program. Your income will be combined with that of your spouse, parents or sponsor, if applicable.

You are not required to provide supporting documents with your application, unless you do not have a permanent code.

If you are enrolled in distance education courses

You are eligible if the program of study and the educational institution are recognized by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport.

However, you are not eligible under the Loans Program for Part-Time Studies if you are in one of the following situations:

  • You are enrolled in courses as an auditor.
  • You are enrolled in language training courses (these courses are not part of a recognized program).
  • Another organization, such as Emploi-Québec or the Ministère de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, is paying your educational or childcare expenses for a semester.
